US (TX): Drip irrigation educational program slated for May 1 in Austin

The Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and Travis County Master Gardeners Association program will be presenting “Drip Irrigation Systems,” a program on water-efficient irrigation, from 10 a.m.– noon May 1 at the Travis County East Service Center, 6011 Blue Bluff, Austin.

“Drip irrigation is a highly efficient and effective way to irrigate your gardens and lawns,” said Daphne Richards, AgriLife Extension agent for horticulture, Travis County. “There are different types of drip irrigation systems, and this program will provide an introduction to some of the more popular ones, so attendees can get an idea of which might be right for their purposes.”

Richards said the program is part of AgriLife Extension’s Water Conservation Series, which was developed to provide educational programming on water-saving technology and the responsible use of water resources.

Attendees will learn how to install an effective water-wise drip irrigation system from Joe Posern, president of the Travis County Master Gardeners, said Mikala McFerren, a Master Gardener and program coordinator.

Posern will describe the key factors involved in a system and how to gauge and monitor its efficiency, McFerren said.

“As the heat of summer arrives, your garden will need more water to continue to produce those beautiful flowers and homegrown vegetables,” she said. “You can reduce the amount of wasted water in your garden this year with irrigation that is targeted for your plants’ specific needs.”

Program registration is $10 in advance or $15 for late or onsite registration. The program is limited to the first 40 registrants.

Attendees can register at the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Conference Services website at https://agriliferegister.tamu.edu/TravisCounty or by phone at 979-845-2604.
