Spain: Project to bring water to 209 hectares of greenhouses

The Irrigation Community of the Region of Nijar (CuCN) was informed of the decision taken by Almeria's Provincial Delegation of the Andalusian Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment, by means of which a unified environmental authorisation has been granted for the modernisation project of the irrigation system supplying water to greenhouses located in the area of Cabo de Gata-Nijar's Natural Park.

The development of the project, designed by Otipsa-Consultores, has thus been legally approved. It consists in the installation of pipes to carry water to a total of 209.2 hectares of intensive greenhouse plantations.

The project involves the installation of over 29 kilometres of tertiary piping to carry water from the desalination plant in Carboneras to the reservoirs of Nijar's Irrigation Community, with the goal of reducing the volume of extractions from the aquifer, thus improving its groundwater table and the water's quality. One of the project's main points is that the irrigated area will not be expanded; instead, the water will be distributed to the holdings located in three areas designated by the Plan for the Management of Natural Resources (PORN) at Cabo de Gata-Nijar's Natural Park, "establishing the measurement and control systems that will allow for an efficient and effective use of the water supplied."
