Focus on protected ornamentals

All ornamentals share the same need - to sell they have to be perfect in every way. Primroses and pansies must have bright colourful flowers and lush green leaves. Poinsettia must have unblemished red bracts and green leaves too. Any detraction from these attributes will lead to poor sales and lost profits.

Nutrition plays an important part in producing high quality plants as it contributes to the processes responsible for appearance. Quality plants = profitability; correct nutrition is vital!

Some key elements

The major nutrients N, P and K rarely cause difficulties especially when good quality fertilizers such as Solufeed are used as recommended. However and for a variety of reasons deficiencies of other elements can occur with the potential of reducing yields and quality They can be long term or transient but usually easily avoided or treated.

Calcium deficiency symptoms are usually transient and a physiological response caused by water problems - absolute deficiencies in normal growing systems are quite rare. Plant growth is stunted and a variety of foliar symptoms occur. Poinsettia are particularly sensitive and calcium deficiency can be devastating.

Most plants respond well to a readily available chelated calcium source; Solufeed 9.5 Ca EDTA is suitable for application through the liquid feed systems. Solufeed also have a number of calcium-containing foliar fertilizers.
