UK: Free testing of Botrytis for fungicide resistance

SRUC are investigating fungicide resistance in Botrytis and would like growers to send in samples of crops that are infected. Taking part in the survey will help the industry as a whole, but will also provide you with immediate information on the efficacy of fungicides in your unit.

Outputs from the project will be new advice on effective fungicide strategies. The research is now into its second year and the researchers are particularly keen to receive samples from vegetable, soft fruit and pulse crops but other crop samples are welcome too.

Fungicide resistance leads to diseases control failures and significant losses. The limited fungicide choice and contained environment for many horticultural crops increases the risk of resistance developing. Most research funding is focused on the major pathogens of the major crops – so for example Septoria in wheat – and the resistance status and efficacy on fungicides in many horticultural crops is, by contrast, almost completely unknown in the UK.
