US: Barnes Greenhouses observes improved uniformity with LED lights

Jarratt Tunstall of Barnes Greenhouses in Dunkirk, New York is transplanting his begonia crop this week. This is his second successful crop cycle after installing LumiGrow LED lights last year. He reports high levels of uniformity as he watches the transplanting machine scanning the trays. “Tray after tray is uniform. We’re doing very little patching,” says Mr. Tunstall.

Founded in the 1920s, Barnes Greenhouses is a leading wholesale supplier of liners and plugs including Vinca and vernalized perennials. Most of the company’s pre-finished products are sold through brokers to finishing growers throughout the northeastern USA.

Installing HPS was never really an option for Barnes Greenhouses due to high electrical costs. “My operating margins don’t support energy-wasting lights,” says Mr. Tunstall.

Since installing the LumiGrow LED lighting solution, Mr. Tunstall has experienced markedly improved quality and yield in the following crops: ageratum, begonia, coleus and impatiens.
