Italy: Entering the domestic top-quality market with Kamarino cherry tomatoes

The European markets is getting more and more interested in top quality cherry tomatoes. In order to tackle this challenge, Dorilli specialised in the cultivation of Kamarino cherry tomatoes.

"Top quality does not only mean better taste, but it also guarantees integrated control, freshness, longer shelf-life and a steady supply. That is why we cultivate in active greenhouses using as little pesticides as we can," explains Guido Grasso, manager of the company.

Dorilli cultivates various types of tomatoes, destined mainly to the English market. It has 8.5 hectares of land producing 7-800,000 kg of tomatoes 9 months a year. "We do keep an eye on the new varieties entering the market, but it is very difficult to change cultivars with such a sophisticated system."

Cherry tomatoes cost more because of the higher production costs. "There are two types of problems - on the one hand, there is competition from France and Holland, while on the other hand it is difficult for Sicilian produce to enter this price range. In addition, we find it difficult to have produce available in May, June and July because it is not perceived as high-quality."

The produce is placed in flow-packs or it is semi-processed. "We do use our own packaging but often clients prefer using their own, however we do keep the Kamarino name to identify our produce."

The relationship with Italian retailers
"We are starting to collaborate with some domestic retailers as we feel Italian consumers would appreciate our produce as they care more about quality, however it is not easy to place it as it will not be possible to achieve the same prices as in Germany (i.e. between €1.99 and €2.59 per 250 gram packets)."

"Contrary to popular belief, quality does not only depend on the right microclimate, water or lighting as, without the right technology, it is not possible to achieve top quality produce. Producers are therefore really important, so much so that English retailers select only 3-4 of them per segment despite the fact that it would be better for them to increase the number of suppliers," concludes Guido Grasso.
