Spain: Almeria invests 20 million Euro in greenhouse modernisation

Growers in the Spanish province of Almeria have invested a total of 22.3 million Euro in projects for the modernisation of their plantations or for the entrance into the greenhouse sector, according to data published by the Regional Delegation of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment.

To this end, funding was granted by the Andalusian Government through 103 resolutions awarding a total of 11.8 million Euro.

Andalusia's Government delegate, Sonia Ferrer, expressed her satisfaction about the positive progress of the province's agriculture in recent years, even though "not everything advances as quickly as desired, as growers still need to make large investments which they are not always able to face."

In this sense, she lamented the fact that many greenhouses are obsolete, which has an impact on the sector's competitiveness. "If we wish to become more competitive than other European and non-EU production areas, improvements need to be made in the structures."

Since 2008, the province's growers have invested almost 65 million Euro in either the modernisation of their plantations or in getting started in the activity.
