Turkey: Tomato from Insuyu about to become a brand name

Insuyu plain in Burdur, located in southwestern Turkey, is the production center for green beans in Turkey, where 30 % of Turkey’s green bean production is grown. However 3 years ago tomato production started in greenhouses in Insuyu and it is slowly becoming a brand name in this area.

Burdur Chamber of Agriculture Chairman, Ibrahim Demir: “For the last 3 years, we have started growing tomatoes in addition to green beans in Insuyu plain. Last year, our growers sustained some losses due to snow, however this year the climate conditions were favorable and our growers are very happy with the tomato prices this year. The prices are between 0. 30 USD and 0.30 USD. The break even price for growers is around 0.25 USD per kg. The tomatoes from this region have a great taste and long shelf life. Currently the production area is around 4 million square feet and the annual production is around 8,000 tons. We believe that the production will significantly increase over the coming years and we are glad to be contributing our national economy in this way.”
