US: MSU horticulture student awarded future organic farmer grant

John Gove, a junior in the Department of Horticulture, earned the 2018 Future Organic Farmer Grant to support his education in organic agriculture.

This nationally competitive grant is provided by the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) Foundation. CCOF is a nonprofit organization that advances organic agriculture through organic certification, education, advocacy, and promotion. The grant was established by CCOF to help young people become organic farmers so that there will be enough organic production to meet the demand for organic products. The Future Organic Farmer Grant Fund provides financial support for organic education from kindergarten through college.

John grew up on a small, diverse vegetable farm and will be the seventh generation of his family to take it over. Through his horticulture studies at MSU, he has learned about sustainable and organic vegetable and fruit production. He hopes to be able to further his education and implement organic practices at his farm to better serve his community for years to come.
