NL: Greenhouse pumpkins for the local market

Jan Varekamp has a long background in growing vegetables. He cultivated greenhouse vegetables for several years and was crop manager at LTO Groeiservice. But now, in mid-August, Jan Varekamp is growing greenhouse pumpkins for the local market on the island of Voorne-Putten. "With greenhouse cultivation we are on the market extra early, well in time for the upcoming pumpkin festivals."

Pumpkins and more

The pumpkins, more than 100 different varieties in total, were sown in a corner of the newly built greenhouse from 2017. "We have as many varieties of four or five plants as possible on 1,200 square meters, so we can offer a lot of variety. We also grow pumpkins outside, but there is always the question of whether there will be enough good, beautiful pumpkins in time for the pumpkin festivals."

Hydroponics
Vers Van Voorne has not been around for long. Jan now grows on 2,000 square meters in total, including 800 square meters of hydroponics. "Anything you can think of can be grown hydroponically, probably even pumpkins, but I won't try that... Pumpkins take up too much space."

Hydroponics is very intensive, with crops close to each other and the crops growing fast. "We grow different types of lettuce, herbs such as basil, but also celery, spring onions, and we're also testing with many other crops on water."

Telling the story of cultivation
Jan first wants to master as many different crops as possible. He then hopes that more and more people will find his company and buy the products, which are sold via the local cooperative De Proefschuur to the regional supermarkets. He also sells through the shop with regional products at his company in Tinte. "The intention is that next year we will be able to use the entire greenhouse area of 1.2 hectares, and in addition to cultivation we also want to give a story to the cultivation. How do we grow? What is healthy food? What role does sustainable energy have? In fact, the plan is to open our doors to the public year-round."
