Southeast Asia is considered to be one of the growing food baskets of the world in the coming decade. Economic diversification and steady urban migration is driving transformational change within the country’s agricultural and horticultural sectors as they redefine their place within the economy and society as a whole. Next week growers from 30 countries will be welcomed to share their views, developments and thoughts on these developments during the Horti Asia 2018.
This year's edition will be the sixth Horti Asia trade fair but the first one organised in post-summer. The exhibition took place in March 2017 and back then was combined for the first time with the Agritechnica Asia. Since exhibitors were pleased with this combination, since the interests of
over 6000 visitors overlapped, this procedure is continued this year.
Developments in Asia
According to researchers like the ISHS, Asian growers are investing in technology that enables them to meet the fast growing demands of the highly populated Asian region. "The fast growing middle class and the focus on fresh produce consumption and floriculture makes investors optimistic", they state. "The market for food in Asia is developing quickly thanks to the high economic growth and exporting ambitions. The region's economies are tackling challenges like food safety and productivity by indoor cultivation."
"Bangkok has proven to be the gateway to surrounding Asian countries: economies in countries such as India, Vietnam and Indonesia develop rapidly and therefore it is expected the ascendancy in the global economy is likely to continue."
Exhibitors
One of the familiar faces at the Horti Asia is greenhouse building company Kingpeng Greenhouse. They have attended this trade show for more than 5 years and has built strong brand influence in South East Asia. This month one of their projects in South Korea will be completed. "The greenhouse includes three cultivation zones and one corridor, with NFT and DFT technique as well as nursery and production of tomato. The function of the greenhouse will be for showing, testing as well as for production", they show.
This greenhouse adopts single layer tempered glass for the roof and double layer glass covering the walls, and like most of the Hi-Tech greenhouses in the world, this greenhouse adopts an automatic control system and fertilisation system for the automation of the greenhouse. "It's one of the 3 solutions that enables the region's performance, which is key to the development of agriculture in Asian markets."
Seminar and network lounge
The Netherlands is the partner country of the Horti ASIA 2018 hosting a futuristic seminar on Horticulture Innovation for Food Security and Climate Change with speakers from East-West Seed and the Wageningen Universities and Research.
Further, Urban Farming Partners from Singapore will hold a spin-off conference inspiring investors on urban farming trends in Asia.
