Spain: Pink Barbastro tomato production may reach 2.1 million kilos

The pink Barbastro tomato campaign reached its peak in terms of production last week, when the harvest of greenhouse and mesh-protected crops coincided with the period of maximum productivity of open ground tomatoes.

This was confirmed by the manager of the Association of Horticulturalists of Alto Aragón, Esteban Andrés, who explained that this year, the peak in the production was reached about fifteen days later due to the excess rainfall in spring.

The total production this year is expected to be between 50% and 60% greater than in the previous campaign, mostly thanks to the great investment made by the Correas-Terra Agronómica group. Therefore, more than 2,100,000 kilos will be harvested, although it is also possible that the spring rains have reduced the total production by 5% to 10%.

The exact figure will only be known in October, since the weather can still play an important role in the production. "Now we are hoping not to have any storms, because otherwise, it would be a tragedy. We hope that the temperatures will remain stable and that the fruit will continue to develop with the excellent quality we've seen so far," added Andrés.

The pink Barbastro tomato harvesting campaign will last until October and maybe even until early November, depending on the temperatures, the amount of sunshine and the rainfall recorded.
