"Today’s agricultural methods are not sustainable"

With the GreenTech coming up this month we're getting in touch with several horticultural intellectuals, entrepreneurs, innovators and general greenhouse geeks. Today Codema tells us more on their 'Grow local, think global' vision.

What is your contribution to the advancement of the global horticulture industry?
Growing sustainably by benefiting people, profits and plants. Codema believes in its ability to create a healthier and more sustainable world for future generations. We develop essential, custom-made horticulture solutions. Every single day. Because your world is our world.

We believe that using the right technology enables us to solve the major global food production challenges. We do this by achieving higher output with higher returns and with lower input. ‘With technology and knowledge we create tools and services for greenhouse operations in order to support our customers in realizing the best return on investment in high quality food production with minimum use of natural resources.’

What would you say is the most important topic in horticulture at the moment?
Today’s agricultural processes demand huge amounts of energy and extract vast quantities of dwindling water from the earth. It’s a wasteful way to grow produce that often requires nasty chemicals. Even worse, it’s dramatically impacted by bad weather and disease, so prices fluctuate wildly.

It’s time to rethink. Ultimately today’s agricultural methods are not sustainable for producers, consumers or for the planet. The world needs a revolution. And it’s already begun.

Our engineers, team of experts and technology divorce food production from finite natural resources such as water and fossil-fuel. What’s more, when we can, Codema tries to close the loop and re-use or recycle outputs from farms. In other words, we’re doing more with less. However worthy our goals, we need to make money too. It’s only because we are profitable that we constantly re-invest in research and technology, team training and product development in order to serve our customers better.

What will you be doing at the GreenTech? Will you present any novelties during the trade show?
CSS (Codema Shuttle System). Introduced in 2018, the CSS is Codema’s answer on the increasing demand on flexibility regarding growing and delivery of (medical) plants. The shuttle can be integrated in current farms as a stand alone unit, as well as a component in an entire fully automatic growing system. The shuttle has been designed to operate in traditional farms as well as to operate in vertical farming.

What project that you’re currently involved in are you most proud of?
Grow local, think global. Codema believes in its ability to create a healthier and more sustainable world for future generations. Codema believes that the cultivation of crops in buildings (vertical farming) can offer many advantages. By growing crops in layers in a controlled environment, it is possible to provide guarantees on the level and quality of production, every day of the year, and whatever the weather and climate (or climate change). Logistics are extremely important for increasing production, cost savings, improvement of working conditions and the quality perception of your crops. Logistics also depend on an operating system, which comprises three components: electricity, hardware and software. The operating system provides fast and clear insight in the total nursery cultivation process. It enables you to anticipate cultivation, processing, purchasing, sales and market developments, flexibly and efficiently.

How do you see the future of horticulture?
Agriculture. But not as it is today. Codema wants to transform the way farming works. We are convinced that the world can grow delicious, sustainable and great tasting produce without needing fossil fuels, vast amounts of fresh water and thousands of acres of cultivated farmland. In other words, we are breaking farming’s dependence on finite resources.

Through co-creating, and working according to our methodology “design-develop-deliver”, we share our horticultural knowledge and skills. This is how we can innovate and deliver sustainable products and services.
We strongly believe that big data analytics is accelerating the speed at which farmers can produce and the ability to predict yield, disease patterns or whatsoever. The end goal would be to provide personalized greenhouse settings in much the same way that consultants approach individual customers through targeted marketing. This personalized approach leads to better treatment for each plant, along with detailed data that can be transferred from producer to producer, making sure they have all the information they need to grow as efficient as possible.

Codema is to exhibit at the GreenTech exhibition June 12-13-14 in Amsterdam. The GreenTech summit will take place June 11th.
