Illegal constructions in horticulture involving foreign workers receiving only a fraction of the minimum wage are to be rooted out, says Dutch minister Lodewijk Asscher. Assher heads the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment. The alleged exploitation of workers in greenhouses has been denounced earlier this year and now several horticultural regions insist on government measures. Through an administrative ploy, workers are paid according to Polish rules and receive around 500 Euro per month. That salary is supplemented in The Netherlands with a fee of 1000 Euro, over which no tax has to be paid.
Asscher wants to put an end to these proceedings. The Inspectorate now has 15 additional inspectors appointed to address the issue. Not only the employer but also the client will be held responsible, says the minister.
