"Compostable twine holds up well in the stress of hot summers"

The hot weather that has dominated Europe for the last two months, didn't just have an impact on crops. When the temperature in the greenhouse rises to a high level, it can also affect the twine. Breaking twines and a messy greenhouse is the last thing you want as a grower.

Now that most of the heat has passed, Paul Willetts of Ecolander looks back with satisfaction. For the last four years Paul and Rachel have been working with compostable twines. "We are happy to see that our twine, TruBio acted very well in these extreme conditions," Paul says.

Ecolander UK LTD offers two strengths: 250 newton (25 kg) is suitable for all crops, like tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and egg plant. The larger tomato varieties they offer the strength 400 newton (40 kg). "The twine is made of natural fibers and we are always looking for ways to improve the strength of it. During the crop rotation the twine can simply be disposed and composted together with the old vines.

Increasing demand

The UK company has its clients worldwide. "We are open for all markets. We see that New Zealand and Australia are at the forefront of this development towards biological material. There is also an increasing demand from Europe and North America, from conventional as well as biological companies. It is interesting to see that interest is not only coming from growers, but also from distributors."

TruBio is also available in red and white.

According to Paul the market for biological, compostable twine is growing. "This year we've had the most interest so far. I think people are becoming more and more environmentally aware. That does not only apply to growers, retailers have their impact as well. There seems to be a big swing in the industry to sustainability, which is good thing."
