German market demands innovation in cherry plum truss tomatoes

In Germany Mini Roma Rispen Tomatoes have become well-known and are a favourite among consumers. It is therefore not surprising that virtually all supermarkets carry cherry plum truss tomatoes in their assortment.

The popularity of cherry plum truss tomatoes is due to their combination of taste and red colour. These small tomatoes – 18 to 22 grams – have a plum shape that appeals to consumers.

Looking for innovation
Yet, there is a growing need for innovation in this segment, particularly in terms of the shelf life of the green elements and truss adhesion.

High expectations
Consumers expect a premium cherry plum truss tomato to continue to be in perfect quality a week after the packing has been opened. That means smooth, shiny tomatoes with fresh green elements, that still properly adhere to the truss. A tomato found loose in the packing is often rejected as unfit for consumption.

The answer: Strabena
Various consumer surveys in Germany show that the Strabena variety is the answer to this demand for the perfect cherry plum truss tomato. Strabena stands out in terms of shelf life and during an extended period of time exhibits fresh green elements and firm tomatoes that stay on the truss.

Nico van Vliet (De Ruiter Trade Partnership Manager) confirms that retail has become aware of this as well: "Various supermarkets are considering including Strabena in their assortment. This creates a perfect premium with which to upgrade the entire segment. The unique mix of plum shape, colour, truss adhesion, taste, green elements and the potential for returns make Strabena the perfect alternative within the Mini Roma Rispen Tomatoes segment!"

Strabena is grown by various growers in Europe under contracts of exclusivity.
