Italy: Courgette and cucumber prices are low

Whether it is due to higher courgette production in July or the increased supply of vegetables in general, various wholesale operators have confirmed that courgette and cucumber prices are low.

"There's a courgette invasion and sales are slow. We have even seen producers that were unable to sell them. Current prices are around 20-30 euro cents," explains a wholesaler.

The situation is not much better for cucumbers, despite the increased popularity of the oblong variety produced in Fondi, which is known to be sweeter and more easily digestible.

Date, cherry and mini-plum tomatoes are doing well. Prices hover between €1.60-2/kg for mini plums and €2.30 for cherry tomatoes. This is because production is not very high and the promotional campaigns carried out by many retail chains are working.

Prices are good for peppers as well - around €1/kg - but demand is slow. The important thing though is that the quality is excellent, with uniform appearance.
