The weather forecast only predicted sun in the past months. Tomato growers rejoice over an extremely good harvest. One of them is Claus Duedal Jakobsen. He is head of marketing and purchase at tomato grower Alfred Pedersen en Zn, in Bellinge, close to Odense. Normally they are harvesting 45 tons of tomatoes per day, but this year the amount of ripe tomatoes has increased by 15 to 20 percent. They can harvest an extra nine tons every day.
Alternatives
The season started out bad because it remained cold for long, delaying the tomatoes by two weeks. Because of the constant heat following, the harvest is now a bit too large. " there="" is="" a="" limit="" of="" what="" supermarkets="" can="" and="" will="" buy.="" i="" am="" looking="" for="" alternative="" selling="" opportunities.="" part="" the="" harvest="" used="" to="" make="" ketchup.="" usually="" we="" use="" less="" quality="" tomatoes="" this,="" but="" now="" cannot="" sell="" those,="" ship="" these="" ketchup="" factory.<="" p="">
Possible problems later in the season
Not only tomatoes are plenty available for the Danish, but the circumstances are also optimal for apples, cucumbers and lettuce. Anne Fabricius, consultant at Dansk Gartneri: " in="" general="" lots="" of="" heat="" and="" light="" are="" positive.="" fruit="" development="" is="" stimulated="" there="" a="" good="" chance="" the="" harvest="" will="" be="" good.="" it="" seems="" vegetables="" fruits="" fall.="" but="" can="" also="" go="" too="" fast.="" plants="" get="" exhausted="" fall".<="" p="">
Jacobsen also foresees problems later on in the season. That is why it is important to profit for the optimal conditions as much as possible.
