Gautier Tomato Discovery Days

France: Five tomato innovations to watch

The tomato sector met for the Tomato Discovery Days, organized Tuesday, 26th of June, at the Gautier headquarters in Eyragues.

The afternoon began with a presentation and tasting session of the breeder's latest varietal innovations for the 2018/2019 campaign. Five varieties have particularly drawn attention:

In the segment of heart-shaped tomatoes, Gautier Seeds launches Corizia (DCC108) to face TSWV(0) resistance issues. This new tomato has a balanced flavor and aromatic intensity that recalls Cauralina, the Gautier’s taste reference. Cordelis (DCC551) is a vigorous plant for long cycles and high-tech crops, with a high yield potential and resistant to powdery mildew.

Currently in trial phase, DJ549 extends the trio of colorful ribbed tomatoes Margold, Marnero and Marbonne, bringing a new ivory color and slightly tangy taste. This variety is well suited for heated and cold sheltered crops.

In the cluster segment, Gautier launches G544 with a high yield potential, resistant to powdery mildew and cladosporiosis, and G541, a tasteful variety with a well balanced profile of sweetness and acidity. They are especially suited to high-tech crops.

The event continued with a presentation from Sonia Da Silva from KANTAR World Panel, the international data management and analysis organization, who presented a survey about the evolution of the purchasing and consumption patterns of tomato, in recent years, in France.

The study highlighted the consumer trends to consume less but better, and emphasized their expectations in terms of information and communication from the fruit and vegetable sector.

Then Coraline HUBIN, communication officer at Gautier Seeds, announced the launch of a new website: nosamourslestomates.com, a digital initiative entirely dedicated to tomato and aimed at the general public, which fits perfectly the current consumer’s concerns, bringing them useful and practical information about tomato.
