Italy: New tomato varieties for an increasingly demanding market

During the Open Week held in Verona, Isi Semented displayed its Rosamunda variety as well as new genetic material.

"New products include two beefsteak varieties. ISI 62347 is large, with fruits weighing 260-280 grams. The flavour is nice with a thin peel and low acidity. Uniform green colour. Harvested when green or completely red," explains Marco Bastoni.

ISI 62355 are slightly smaller with a green shoulder. Production is abundant and, just like the previous variety, they are resistant to the Tomato spotted virus.

"The Rosamunda variety truly stands out and manages to reach higher prices than traditional beefsteak tomatoes. Its pink colour and organoleptic qualities are unique and unlike all other table tomatoes."

To promote the pink tomato variety, Isi Sementi registered the Pomo Rosa brand.

Rosalinda is a globe beefsteak variety similar to Rosa di Sorrento. The flavour is excellent, with a pink colour and high specific weight. "It's the first year we've been producing it and feedback is very positive."

Rosalinda has a medium-early cycle with fruits weighing 350-400 graps. Suitable for both open fields and greenhouses.

Isi Sementi is increasingly focused on organoleptic qualities and niche productions. "We have various types available including Tigro, Dolly, ISI 82313, Melange and Black Pearl as well as varieties with appealing colours and unique flavours. They can be used to make mixed pots or to be sold singularly."
