Sjaak Verploegen, Scherpenhuizen:

“Difficult Dutch tomato market, but there’s light at the end of the tunnel”

In the past few weeks, the tomato market was difficult, price-wise. “The large harvests in particular resulted in this price level. All of Europe is now in production, and we’ve seen very high productions across the line,” says Sjaak Verploegen of Scherpenhuizen. Prices for vine tomatoes are around 20 cent, round tomatoes have now risen to about 30 cent.

However, the trader does see a light at the end of the tunnel. “The low prices are the result of large supply. Demand is significant in most segments. Productions will decrease considerably. Growers who are done harvesting will now go into illuminated production, and that should result in some more room on the market. I expect different prices as of this week.”
