Kazakhstan: Thermal greenhouses built in Almaty

Thermal greenhouses are being built in the Ouygour district of the Almaty region. Hot mineral water provides a constant microclimate in the complexes. Within the program of establishing a food belt around Almaty, it is planned to allocate 100 ha of land for greenhouses.

Mr. Atyom Dydyko, technologist, is proud to show the results of his efforts. "This tomato variety forms such big clusters. It happens that the stem cannot handle the weight", says the specialist. Mr. Dydyko was invited from Ukraine to educate the employees. The technologist treats every seedling of tomatoes or cucumbers with reverence and expects the same in return. "The results exceed all expectations. A harvest product batch is almost 20 thousand tons of vegetables per week."

“The technology is small in volume, growing in artificial substrate is the basis of the technology, vegetables are fed with a ready-made solvent, balanced in all nutrition elements, environmentally friendly”, says Mr. Dydyko. “There are no nitrates as we only give a plant what it needs.”

The greenhouse complex is equipped in accordance with international standards. Mineral fertilizers are brought in by a set programme with account to the crop culture development phase. The microclimate also enables good crops. Mineral water provides the required temperature, 6oC. According to the Deputy Head of the Ouygour district administration, almost 10 ha of such complexes have opened within the past couple of years.

“This year we are planning to launch another 6 ha of greenhouses”, noted the Deputy Head of the Ouygour district administration, Mr. Kuralbek Bekmuhamedov. “Negotiations with the investors are still being held. The greenhouse area will be expanded. We have allocated about 100 ha for that and 2-3 companies have joined in.”

The produce of the greenhouse is sold in Almaty and throughout the country. Recently, a third of vegetables produced has been exported to Russia. In the Almaty region, almost 100 ha of land is occupied by industrial greenhouses.
