Is growing fruit and veg with LEDs truly sustainable?

The use of artificial lighting in greenhouses is nothing new, but compared to the fluorescent sources and the high-pressure sodium lamps used in the past, LEDs are a true revolution for its improved efficiency, specific spectrum systems and lower heat generation. In new LED greenhouses energy consumptions are cut down by 75% and the use of water is down to 90% because LEDs develop less heat and lower evaporation rates.

Perhaps the most interesting aspects lie in the possibility to obtain a fully controllable light spectrum. The use of certain frequencies in the colour range can be aimed at maximizing the yield of certain crops and even increasing the concentration of some components. For example, high levels of red in the light spectrum will increase the growth of tomatoes and enhance the concentration of vitamin C in mustard, spinach and onions.

Environmental benefits and healthier plants
A question may arise: is growing fruit and vegetables with LEDs a truly sustainable solution? The answer is yes for many reasons. For example, there is no need to use pests to defend crops and LEDs will increase yield, with a lower consumption of water without compromising the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables (vitamins, mineral salts, etc.), that can even be improved by adjusting the luminous spectrum.

These results have led many experts to point at LED lighted greenhouses as possible solutions for addressing the increasing food demand by a growing population which is expected to reach even higher rates in the next few decades.

Healthier flowers and plants even inside stores
LEDs do not benefit only large greenhouses, but also the plants used in interior decorating or in flowers shops. Home farming is another sector that according to experts is witnessing a steep rise, in line with new eco-friendly trends. Nothing is better for organic food lovers than being able to grow their own salad at home without using pests or chemical fertilizers.
