Canadian veg production increases, production costs rise

From 2016 to 2017, Canadian greenhouse vegetable production area has increased by over 6% (6.48), while the number of farms has decreased by 0.8% to 887. This means fewer growers with larger greenhouse area. Although there are 6% more hectares in production, the total production costs over this period have increased almost 8% to 1.2 billion CD$.

One significant reason for the increased production costs is the higher number of employees. From 2016-2017, the total employees in the greenhouse vegetable industry increased by more than 1000 (+1062) to a total of 12,568 workers.

The 2017 payroll for these employees was up over 13% from 2016, totaling CD$ 351 million. Over the last four years, this payroll figure has risen by almost 40%.
