The green bean season is set to commence shortly in California. Growers have noted that conditions in the Santa Maria region have been very favorable in the lead up, with none of the weather problems present that affected other parts of California. The crop is looking good and the season, which typically lasts for six months, will be starting on schedule.
"Our crop of green beans is coming along well as we have had no weather issues or any other problems," said Sal Barajas of Better Produce. "We have a very good program that starts in two weeks and is set to continue through to November. Everything is shaping up well so far for a great season ahead."
Steady product
Better Produce have established the program to ensure a steady supply throughout the season, with the aim to avoid any supply issues. "We maintain our program to ship two to three loads a week throughout the whole season," Barajas shared. "In this way, we ensure that we cover supply and set a stable season."
The company deals with bulk product and Barajas said that all of the green beans they harvest are handpicked, which he noted customers prefer to the mechanically harvested beans. "All of our green beans are handpicked, and because they don't sustain damage from being machine harvested, customers are happy," he said. "Our green beans are mostly destined for the fresh market in 30lb cartons. We also have a squash, chili pepper, and strawberry program, which we tie in together."
Market will depend on other regions
Recently, the green bean market has maintained a steady level. Moving forward into the California season, the only potential threat to the market will be if any of the other regions begin to see heavier production.
"Green beans have enjoyed fairly steady demand," Barajas observed. "The market has generally held in the $20.00 - $25.00 range, and by remaining there, it's a good indicator that supply is moving steadily. We don't anticipate any problems, but it also depends on what happens in Fresno. If volume starts to come in heavy from there, this can affect the market."
