Modigliani Frutta has started harvesting strawberries a few days ago in the Cesena and Cesenatico areas. The produce is sold through a few supermarkets and direct sales. Next, it will be the turn of cherries, one of the leading products for the company.
"Harvesting operations started on April 14th and now, thanks to the high temperatures, fruits are ripening quickly. It's one of the best seasons of the past few years: good yields, high organoleptic quality, deep aroma, very few deformed fruits. It's a pleasure to work like this," explains Davide Modigliani.
Modigliani grows the Pir5 variety under glass in greenhouses. The strawberries are characterised by high rusticity and organoleptic quality. The variety is actually more popular abroad than in Italy, as it's often the case with good Italian products.
To obtain the maximum quality, Modigliani plants single rows that are 20 cm apart, leading to improved ventilation and lower risk of fungal diseases. The average price at the moment is €5/kg.
"My policy is to have similar average prices throughout the campaign, unlike retailers who opt for very high prices at the beginning followed by special offers and price pick ups. I could earn some more on the early produce, but I get the money back with the late varieties. This way, consumers learn how to give a fair value to high-quality strawberries."
