"René Welles: "Everyone has many programmes"

European cucumber prices peak due to good weather and crop change

Cucumbers' auction prices peaked at the end of last week. They reached about EUR 0.50 per piece. "Nice prices, but the number of growers who profit is limited. Everyone has a lot of programmes. This means there is hardly anything left to auction. The current programme prices are not bad, but they are also not EUR 0.50", says cucumber grower, René Welles. He is based in the Dutch town of Grubbenvorst and takes care of his own sales. "It is nice to grow when things are like this."

"There have been changes in cultivation in the west of the country. This is slowly happening in the south as well. The good weather is the most important reason for the good market situation. I expect the market to be good for the next two or three weeks", says René. He sells his product via exporters and the retail sector in the Netherlands and England. "I have a good spread of permanent clients. It is going well. We know what we mean to each other."

"The lit cultivation season started well. Up to Easter, it was also going well with the unlit cultivation. After that, it took a bit of a dip. Spain was also on the market for quite a while. However, when we got a few warm days, the market started to pick up again. We saw this happening over these last few days again. Prices have never been as high as those of yesterday", he concluded.
