Modernization of irrigation systems

"Spain: "More needs to be done with less water"

Spanish Minister of Agriculture Isabel García Tejerina is convinced that, just like any other economic activity, irrigation "cannot escape from, or be alien to" the trend for seeking greater sustainability.

She made this comment during the signing of the agreement to fund and carry out the modernization works of the irrigation systems used by the communities of Orellana, Cartuja de San Juan and Molinar del Flumen (all of them in Alto Aragón) and of the Central Board of Users in the South of Guaro, in Malaga.

According to García Tejerina, the current climatological challenges "are forcing us to invest in more efficient and modern infrastructure for irrigation, because more needs to be done with less water."

She also stated that the national irrigation strategy 2018-2025, which aims for the full modernization of the Spanish irrigation systems, will be presented soon.

At the moment, almost 800,000 hectares are affected by the plan. It is a necessary step, according to the Minister, in order "to promote a sustainable rural development and achieve a productive, profitable agriculture." The goal is to save an extra 1,000 cubic hectometres of water.
