How to develop the ideal spray boom?

To develop a functioning spray boom, cooperation between producer and supplier is important. Horticultural supplier Mertens has been an official Empas dealer for years, who sells, among other things, motorized spray carts and spray booms of the brand.

About nine years ago Hans Beerkens (Mertens) and Andrei de Bruin (Empas) began development of the strawberry spray boom for seven rows. A number of requirements to the spray boom have been set. Firstly, the boom has to be stable and as compact as possible, so during operation the ground and crops are not touched.

Secondly, the boom has to be relatively light to be able to operate easily. Finally, the flexibility of the spray caps is important. With the extensive adjustment possibilities it is possible to realize optimal spraying in all situations. A year after the start of the development process the first boom was delivered: a great cooperation between producer and supplier, which resulted in a valued product.

Empas machines in practice
Van Gennip soft fruit has a machine, which is fitted to a pipe-rail vehicle of Berkvens Greenhouse Mobility. Piet Wijnen is head of growth at the Asten location. He is satisfied with the spray boom, and has ordered a similar combination of spray vehicle and spray boom for the new location in horticultural area Californië. Piet: "The reach is wide. We use the maximum length in one go: eight meters. I am also happy with the adjustable caps. An extra plus is that the motorized spray unit is easy to use by all."

Valuable cooperation between producer and supplier
Hans Beerkens values his long cooperation with Empas. "I know them very well. Empas' mentality is 'Do what you promise', and we connect to that." Hans has been working for Mertens for 18 years, and has been cooperating with Empas from the start.

The position nozzles on the poles can be set by an inbuilt securing system to five different settings and can be locked. The bayonet connection makes the nozzles easy and quick to clean and replace.
