Connecticut grower has become aquaponics YouTube star

In a small, rural community in northeastern Connecticut, technology is being used to redefine farming.

Rob Torcellini, owner and operator of Bigelow Brook Farm, recently invited the University of Connecticut Extension master gardener program to check out his aquaponics operation.

Torcellini, now followed by more than 60,000 budding farmers on his YouTube page, is an accidental aquaponist. He readily admits he had no intention of “getting into” aquaponics.

“Believe me, I’m not much of a gardener,” Torcellini said.

More than 10 years ago, attempting to combat a growing mosquito problem, he added fish — about 200 koi and a handful of goldfish — to his farming repertoire.
