Turkey: Watermelon harvest about to start in greenhouses

The growers in Aksu district of Antalya is one of the most important areas for greenhouse production in Turkey and the growers are getting prepared for the first harvest of watermelons. As the weather was warmer throughout the entire year than usual compared to previous years, the watermelons will be harvested earlier than before.

The seeds were planted in January and they will start to be sold in the upcoming days. The growers also expect to receive very good prices for the first harvest products. Some of them also took extra security measures to ensure the safety of their greenhouses and prevent any theft against such an in-demand product.

Speaking on behalf of fruits and vegetables wholesalers, Nevzat Akcan warned local growers against imported products. Nevzat Akcan: “There is currently imported watermelon from Iran being sold around 0.5 – 0.6 USD per kg and if the imported products keep coming, they will drive down the prices of the local products to 0.25 USD per kg level”
