“Inspired” Earth Day pledge: green, clean, and locally grown

With more North Americans expressing concerns about long-term water supplies, The Star Group said it is taking action – announcing plans to expand its “living lettuce” greenhouse project in Coaldale, AB.

The company said the “Inspired Greens” lettuce project, built on new greenhouse technologies from around the world, grows its product using 92 percent less water than field lettuce. One head of “Inspired Greens” is grown using 1.5 liters, compared to the 60-180 liters it takes to grown field product. With pesticide-free, fresh lettuce, grown in Western Canada all year round, the greenhouse offering also reduces transportation miles.

Driven by the response to “Inspired Greens” from consumers, The Star Group recently announced plans to launch Phase Two of the greenhouse. This will increase production to an estimated 20 million heads grown annually in Canada.

“Water is a precious, precious resource, so in our efforts to be the most innovative team in produce we are constantly searching for ways to be better,” said David Karwacki, Chief Executive Officer of The Star Group. “We are continually exploring every stage of the supply chain – from seed selection and growing practices to packaging and logistics. We want to play our part in providing eloquent produce solutions that are environmentally friendly.”

The “Inspired Greens” greenhouse re-uses 20,000 liters of water each day, limiting the drain on this precious natural resource. The water is filtered and sterilized to prevent the spread of waterborne pathogens and is oxygenated to promote healthy root systems.

“When technology, agriculture, and the environment all converge, we can create new products that taste great, are affordable for consumers, and are doing the right things for the earth,” said Karwacki. “Being at the cutting edge of innovation means you do not need to sacrifice the environment when you are growing fresh produce that people love.”
