India: Nilgis growers trained on advanced horticultural technologies

A special training programme was organized on “Modern Technologies in Horticulture Crops and Protected Cultivation” for the farmers of Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, from 9th to 11th April 2018 at ICAR-Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (ICAR-IIHR). The objective of the programme was to impart training on advances in production technology of horticultural crops and protected cultivation for farmers of Nilgiris, so that such technologies may be disseminated for adoption by farmers of Nilgris.

Nineteen Participants representing Kotagiri taluk of Nilgiris district participated in the programme. The participants were imparted training on advances in production technology of selected fruit crops, vegetables, ornamental crops, production of quality planting material in commercial horticultural crops, protected cultivation of high value horticultural crops, handling, packing, storage of horticulture crops, design and fabrication of greenhouse structures/machinery, integrated disease management, integrated pest management and integrated nutrient management technologies and marketing of horticultural crops.

Lecture-cum-discussion, trainers-trainees interface, visit to demonstration plots, poly houses etc. were the modes employed to impart training to the participants. The trainees were very much satisfied with the programme and opined that they have learnt many new scientific management practices to implement in actual farm situations. Based on the pre and post-exposure knowledge scores of the participants, it was found that at an average of 29% knowledge gain was experienced by the participants.
