Three quarters of German vegetables under glass are tomatoes

According to the Thuringian State Statistics Office, a total of 11,300 tonnes of vegetables were harvested in 2017 in the Thüringer greenhouses. This was 400 tons or 4 percent more than in 2016. The greenhouse acreage was 37 hectares, 2 hectares or 5 percent below last year’s levels.

Nearly three quarters of the Thuringian greenhouse area was used for the cultivation of tomatoes. The total yield of these 27 hectares of tomatoes was 9,900 tons. That was 400 tons or 4 percent more than the year before. The yield per hectare of 361 tons was 27 tons or 8% above last year's level (334 tons per hectare). By contrast, the long-term average of the years 2011 to 2016 (390 tons per hectare) was undercut by 28 tons per hectare or 7 percent.

The cultivation of cucumbers took place on almost 2 hectares of the Thuringian greenhouse acreage. With a yield of 79 tons per hectare, a total of 122 tons of cucumbers were harvested. Total tonnage was just under a quarter lower than in 2016.
