Greenhouse horticulture makes first steps to high caloric gas

The first requests to convert burners to an installation that runs on high caloric gas have been received by Vitotherm. The Ministry of Economical Affairs and Climate has written to a number of larger Dutch growing companies. The sudden and firm letter from the Ministry has surprised all those involved. The urgency will be related to the earthquakes in Groningen, a problem which requires a rapid solution.

Ed Roeleveld and Geert-Willem van Weert of Vitotherm

Ed Roeleveld, Vitotherm: "We already have received a number of requests from growing companies and industry. We can convert the existing installation for running on high caloric gas. The conversion is necessary to make the installation safe, efficient, and with good values for CO2 fertilization. The conversion can also be combined with even lower NOx emissions / efficiency improvements. Every installation will be analysed and a fitting solution will be offered." Those in possession of a Vitotherm burner built in 2001 or after, and which is equipped with an electronic gas/air mixing system, is already prepared for high caloric gas and requires no conversion. A "small adjustment to the gas button" and calibrating the system is all that is required.

Oxygen regulation
A possible variable gas quality which may be going to be supplied is one of the things spoken about. Vitotherm has an oxygen regulation which can be coupled to the electronic regulation and makes sure the variable gas quality does not affect the burning in the installation. It is corrected automatically. This makes the installations ready for all future changes to the Dutch gas supply.

Already in 2015 - because of changing gas mixtures - research was conducted at two hundred companies looking for alternatives to low caloric gas. Measures and investments have been documented at that time.
