Non-invasive tool to assess fruit ripeness

As tropical fruit becomes more and more popular, consumers need to find fruit that is of better quality and ready to eat. Technology can help assess the degree of ripeness without damaging the fruit.

Fruit Firm Meter

"Thanks to the Durometer, we can assess the degree of ripeness of many types of fruit in a quick, precise and non-invasive way. It works very well with avocados, tomatoes and cherries. It simulates the pressure of a fingertip on the flesh, just like consumers do in stores (and shouldn't really). Those importing high-quality avocados and mangoes bear significant costs. This device enables assessing internal ripening levels, sorting the fruit according to logistic times and type of clientele," explains Enrico Turoni from TR Turoni.

Fruit Firm on mango

Prof. Costa's group at the University of Bologna developed a series of non-destructive tools that use absorbance to measure the chlorophyll level in fruit. This type of measurement is not affected by the seasonal weather conditions, which affects other parameters such as sugar level.

Firm meters can also be used on tropical fruit

TR Turoni also uses Fruit Firm, perfect for kiwis, blueberries and cherries.

"The tropical fruit market is looking for non-invasive tools. Importers know the market is growing, but only for high-quality fruit. But it's not easy to assess the degree of ripeness of a mango or an avocado. These topics will be discussed at Macfruit during the Tropical Fruit Congress."
