September 11-13, Rotterdam

International Peatland Society celebrates 50th anniversary with symposium

The International Peatland Society will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a Jubilee Symposium and associated events. The venue will be the ss Rotterdam, a former passenger liner and cruise ship that is moored in Rotterdam harbour in the Netherlands.

The main jubilee events including symposium, excursions and Gala dinner will be held on 11-13 September. The topics presented at the Symposium will be of interest to peatland and peat scientists, peat industry managers (peat harvesting, growing media production and energy generation), policy makers and regulators, as well as environmental NGOs.

Prior to the main Jubilee events, on Monday 10th September 2018, there will be a special ‘Global Peat Summit’ for senior executives of companies that rely upon peatland and/or peat products for a significant part of their business. The Summit will provide the opportunity to be informed and discuss the importance of international conventions and agreements which directly and indirectly affect the management of the world's peatlands.

Symposium
The Jubilee Symposium is titled “Wise Use of Peatlands - Past and Future”. This will focus on peatland landscape history and management, responsible peat production, use of peat in horticulture, subsidence of drained peatlands, CO2 emissions from drained and undrained peatland and rewetting of peatlands after use. Of special interest will be consideration of tropical peatlands and the importance of peatland rehabilitation and restoration. Offers of presentations on all aspects of peatland and peat are welcomed. A highlight of the symposium will be the presentation of the results of the IPS project “Peat for Food and Quality for life”.

Summit
This key pre-Symposium event will be addressed by Senior executives of International Conventions, Agreements and Programmes who will inform executives of the importance of the global peatland resource. The role of international and regional organizations in initiating policies on peatland and peat will be explained, and how these can affect the operations of peat industry companies once adopted by contracting parties (Governments).

Social Program
Social activities will consist of an ice-breaking party, excursions, and gala dinner. Above all, the Jubilee Symposium is a celebration of the IPS over the last 50 years. All are welcome to participate and enjoy this milestone achievement.

Registration is now open and can be made on www.IPSJubileeSymposium.nl. There is a special rate for IPS-members and for those attending the Global Peat Summit. Make sure you register in by 15 April to receive an early-bird discount.
