Turkey: Syrians trained to be employed in greenhouses

The training program organized by the combined efforts of West Mediterranean Economy Development Foundation (BAGEV), United Nation Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Turkey Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock for Syrian agricultural workers is moving to its second phase. In the first phase, Syrian workers received a 3 month training in Isparta about fruit agriculture. In the second phase, they will receive specific training regarding working in greenhouses.

BAGEV President Ali Candir: “Some of the workers who completed the first phase of the training have started their employment at various fruit growers. We will continue with this project upon the request from tomato growers. Most of the Syrian workers already work in greenhouses. With this project, we will increase their qualification and technical knowledge thus our growers will be able to get more productivity from them. The goal of the project is creating a qualified labor force for industries that are lacking this and assisting Syrians in their adaptation to Turkey. During the training, the participants will all be paid 8.5 USD per day.

As BAGEV, we have founded the first regional employment office in Turkey in 2009. In 2017, we have created employment for 926 people. We offer our services for free to companies who are looking for employees. We have right now a database of 15,519 people looking for jobs in our system. 27% of them are primary school graduates, 24% of them are high school graduates and 20% of them are university graduates. In 2017, we had ads for 699 job openings. Currently we have ads for 30 job openings.”
