Italy: Kamarino cherry tomatoes are not a commodity

"After starting with almost all the table tomato segments, we understood that, in order to grow, we had to focus on cherry tomatoes and supply a superior quality," explains Guido Grasso, administrator of Azienda Agricola Dorilli.

Guido Grasso

Dorilli was established in 1999 by the Planeta family. It decided to focus on Kamarino cherry tomatoes in 2013. It's a prime quality tomato that has a unique flavour throughout the production period.

Kamarino tomatoes are always sweet and crunchy, never watery and with an excellent acid-sugar balance. The controlled environment inside greenhouses exalts these characteristics. Plants and the fruit ripen in exceptional conditions.

"Sicily's sunlight and light conditions are the main ingredients of an authentic local product. Our greenhouses represent an added value - they cover 9 hectares and are equipped with an air conditioning system."

The company produces 900 tons of Kamarino every year. 20% of it goes to Italian retailers while 80% is shipped to Switzerland (35%), Austria (10%) and England (35%).

"While specialised productions are considered as having an added value abroad, Italy still finds it hard to appreciate an authentic premium product. Supplying a single product is considered a limitation on certain markets. This doesn't just depend on price policies, but also on the difficulty to logistically manage an exclusive product in retail. A paradox that doesn't seem to reward high-quality."

"Italian retailers are looking to purchase tasty tomatoes and commodities from the same suppliers, but often it's not possible as producing commodities or specialities requires different skills, facilities and technologies."
