Romanian growers hit hard by unexpected snow and low temps

A heavy blizzard lashed southern Romania last Friday, which is causing a lot of problems for growers, especially for those growing greenhouse vegetables. The National Weather Administration has warned that the weather is expected to stay cold through to the end of the week.

"The cold weather and snow has hit exactly in the largest indoor and outdoor producing areas in the country - in the South and South-East. Growers are struggling to remove the heavy snow from the top of the greenhouses in order to save the structure of the greenhouse, the plastic film and, most importantly, the crops," lamented Dr. Ing Marius Petrache, from Marcoser.

Dr. Petrache said that the types of temperatures they are seeing now, with daytime temps between -3 to -5, and night-time temperatures dipping down to -10 is extremely unusual for this time of year, which is why many growers have been caught off guard.

"A lot of growers, especially those who hadn't protected their crops from low temperatures and frost, suffered the most damage. Growers with greenhouse heating systems and microporous non-woven film had better luck, with little to no damage," shared Dr. Petrache.

"Greenhouse vegetable production has been hit hardest by the recent weather; with peppers, eggplants, cucumber, tomatoes and beans affected most. Some field crops, such as grafted watermelon, cabbage and potatoes, will see losses as well."
