Land owned by Dutch province

Nature's Green opens new 4.6 ha greenhouse

On March 19, the new greenhouse of Best of Four member Nature's Green Group opened its doors. The opening ceremony was conducted by Alderman Paul Sanders of Peel en Maas and deputy Twan Beurskens of Limburg (Netherlands). The new 4.6 hectare cucumber greenhouse is located on a parcel of land that Nature's Green Group leases from the province, says Rob Bakker.

"The whole process went pretty smoothly. In March 2017 we had our first meeting with the province." And now the new greenhouse is open for business.

Traditional cultivation

Rob lists some technical details: "We have diffuse Albarino glass, with 20% Haze double AR coating, and a gate height of 6.15 meters." There is no high wire or lighting. "Just like in our other company we practice traditional cultivation here."

How does the long-lease construction work?
"We had expansion plans and heard about a local company that leases land from the province, so I went to the province to ask if this would be possible for us as well. The province owns the land and we lease that land for a certain period of time. During the lease we have the option to purchase the land."

What are the benefits?
"We did not buy the land ourselves, and that saves money which means we have lower start-up costs. The advantage for the province is that it will create new jobs and that they support an entrepreneur from Limburg. At the opening ceremony, the regional press was well-represented in addition to the 35 guests."

Can this arrangement be used for a future expansion?

"It is still too early for that. First we will achieve the best possible yield with this greenhouse and in time we will buy the land from the province."
