Vincent Elegoet, Saveurs du Bout du Monde:

"Offering a Spanish tomato in Brittany requires guts"

This Spanish pink tomato called 'Rosa de la Reina’ is being offered by the Breton company ‘Saveurs du Bout du Monde’. Vincent Elegoet, manager of the company, says: "For once, our Spanish friends produced a superb tomato. It should be eaten slightly pink; don’t wait for it turn more red.”

The Rosa de la Reina is to be eaten slightly pink; ripened further, you may find it to be a little on the mealy side.

"In France, we already have varieties of hybrid pink tomatoes: they are offered by the major Breton brands, but they are rather tasteless. Offering a Spanish tomato in Brittany requires guts. But it’s no bluff, since it actually tastes great. I hope the pink tomato’s popularity takes off once its taste is discovered by consumers."

Apart from the Rosa de la Reina, Saveurs du Bout du Monde offers all the Breton tomatoes. Currently, the tomato market in Brittany is quiet. "The snow does not encourage the consumption of spring products, such as tomatoes. But Easter is coming soon, and consumption will increase."

Vincent calls himself a traditional Breton shipper, but a little different from the others. "I always try to find small quality niches all over, like sweet, little carrots from England, vegetables that are quite often overlooked and products of all colours. Our specialty is to find new and original products."
