Animation: solution for future freshwater shortage

Due to climate change, rising sea levels, soil subsidence and salinization of the groundwater, fresh water is becoming ever scarcer. At the same time, there are more often periods with a lot of precipitation. All that rainwater could provide a solution for the freshwater shortage. Exactly how that should work, COASTAR (COastal Aquifer STorage and Recovery) has shown in this animation.

COASTAR is an action perspective for a robust freshwater supply in low-lying Netherlands through large-scale, organized use of the subsoil for storage and supply of fresh water with benefits for the management of the entire water system. Research in 2017 has shown that COASTAR can be a solution for the fresh water problems in the low-lying part of the Netherlands. Further elaboration is necessary on a technical, organizational and legal level.

COASTAR is an initiative of Allied Waters, Arcadis, Deltares and KWR and is supported by, among others, LTO Glaskracht, the business community and governments in the low-lying part of the Netherlands.
