"Higher yield, longer shelf life with moving gutter system"

For many growers of leafy greens it has always been a challenge to grow as many crop cycles as possible. Of course, the delicate produce can be grown quite cheap at other locations, but since it is a fragile product that needs to be marketed fresh, modern automated hydroponic systems are being developed to give growers the opportunity to reach high yields with the least amount of labor and energy.

Codema has used its experience to design and develop an advanced automatic moving gutter system for the fresh produce of lettuce, herbs, microgreens and baby leafs. After brainstorming, designing and redesigning, the first project of this new kind of growing system was built in Switzerland and has been in full production for 1.5 years now.

The moving gutter system optimises the yield, which increases the number of crops. The system can be adjusted to the needs and demands of the client. According to the Meier Brothers: “The system costs are considerably higher, of course, but that’s outweighed by the benefits. For example, the lettuce yield with NFT is four to five times higher. In terms of other advantages, this method is more hygienic and reduces water consumption – not only during crop production, but also when cleaning the lettuce ready for sale. On top of that, the production process can be automated which saves labour costs. And, further down the chain, the product has a longer shelf life because the lettuce plants are harvested and sold with their roots still attached. In other words, NFT delivers a good return on investment.”
