New Orleans and Metairie

US: Carrots, cabbages and Brussels sprouts go flying

Last Sunday the 36th Annual Louisiana Irish-Italian Parade rolled through Metairie. Men dressed in tuxedos and kilts, armed with bouquets of colourful carnations, marched down Veteran's Boulevard. And then there were the floats, bands and dance groups.

But according to nola.com there was also a battle of vegetables thrown, such as carrots, cabbages and Brussels sprouts. These were tossed to the crowds, who were armed with baskets and fishing nets in the hopes of catching something.

New Orleans St. Patrick's Day celebrations, one day earlier, had a similar theme as participants were throwing cabbages into the crowd.
