An industry at the heart of French rural territories

France: Innovations in seeds production

With a steady increase in the number of jobs and investments, seed companies in 62 departments are boosting the local economy, while contributing to the agro-ecological transition.

Capitalist companies of all sizes (cooperations, family businesses, and listed companies) have a remarkable industrial park. This industrial know-how, combined with a sustained level of investment in research, enables France to maintain its position as the world's leading exporter, as well as the leading European producer, of seeds. The sector's contribution to the balance of the agricultural trade reached a new record in 2016, with a total of € 951m; making up 47% of the total.

The survey on the industrial performance of seed companies, conducted by the French Union of Seed Companies (UFS), shows that employment in the industry increased by more than 4% between 2014, and 2017 (plus 5% for IDUs). The increase should continue with more than a 3% increase announced for 2022. The investments, being very high between 2010 and 2015, were slightly down these last three years, but remain supportive to an industrial sector with an annual revenue rate of 2.2%.

Concerned about the protection of their employees, the companies engage in actions of improvement concerning the ergonomics of the workstations, the pursuit of the control of the exposure to phytosanitary products, as well as improving the direction and/or reduction of noise. From an environmental point of view, 60% of the companies promise to voluntarily set up actions towards both the improvement of the energy efficiency, as well as going green with the energy mix in particular.

The members of the UFS wish to be part of the agro-ecological transition of agriculture, and to develop varieties tolerant to pests (viruses, fungi, etc.), reduce the usage of phytosanitary products and/or varieties resistant to hazards for the adaptation to climate change. Other points providing leverage, such as biocontrol or bio-stimulants, can be associated with seeds; in particular by their coating. These alternatives, when they are available and efficient, will impact the seed production business, as well as the factories’ future. Access to productional factors in the field remains essential, particularly with the ever increasing responsible use of water resources. This agro-ecological transition will be achieved through a combinated approach of all solutions, including agronomic, and digital ones; This is the founding principle of the pragmatic solution agreement, to which the UFS chooses to contribute, along with 35 partners.
