China: Price of green peppers drops for the first time since New Year

The internal retail price of green pepper on the Wan Bang market showed a downward trend this week. The main reason for this development is an increase in volume on the market. The overall price of hot pepper varieties is higher this year than it was last year. The main reason for this development is that Hainan vegetables entered the market in smaller volumes this year than they did last year as a result of weather conditions. This week, after Spring Festival finished, the price of Hainan hot pepper varieties dropped.

The current market sales of green pepper predominantly depend on supply from Hainan. Secondary supply comes from Guangxi and Shangqiu. The Hainan supply that entered the market this week clearly exceeded last week's supply. Furthermore, the supply from Guangxi is nearing its end, so the quality is declining. The overall supply volume from Hainan is stable. It is estimated that this condition will last until Qingming Festival [Tomb Sweeping Festival on April 5th, 2018] has passed.

The price now shows a downward trend in comparison with last month. This development is mainly because last month was the supply stage for Spring Festival when the overall demand was relatively large and prices were relatively high.
