Husagro BVBA expands

"Belgium: "We said goodbye to the coeur de boeuf"

After an earlier expansion of 1.2 hectares in 2010, construction started at the Belgian Langemark again two weeks ago. This time Havecon is working on a 3.4 hectare greenhouse for the cultivation of vine tomatoes. The concrete has been poured and despite somewhat swampy conditions the greenhouse should be completed in May.

"Then the De Vijlder firm can start on the heating and the interior of the greenhouse can be prepared. If all goes well, the autumn cultivation should be able to be started in August," says Wim Saelens of Husagro. Husagro will soon be growing vine tomatoes on a total of 5.7 hectares. The new greenhouse will receive diffused glass from Cultilene with anti-reflex coating on both sides. The automation in the company warehouse will also be increasing. Saelens: "In connection with this automation we will be investing fully in vine tomatoes as of this year. We said goodbye to the cultivation of the variety coeur de boeuf."

Husagro grows under the Tomabel label with respect for nature and environment. The tomatoes are sold through the Reo Veiling in Roeselare. A new building to house seasonal labourers will be built at the same time.
