King Willem-Alexander opens new compost factory for mushroom substrates

The Dutch monarch Willem-Alexander will perform the ceremonial opening of CNC Grondstoffen’s new Indoor Fresh Compost facility on April 13, 2018 in Milsbeek, North-Limburg.

"Indoor Fresh Compost is a high-quality and environmentally friendly ingredient for mature compost. By the end of 2017 all 32 tunnels of the new facility were being used, which means that all hybrid compost from CNC Grondstoffen is now produced on the basis of Indoor Fresh Compost with an optimal process duration.”

CNC Grondstoffen processes more than 600,000 tonnes annually of horse manure, chicken manure and gypsum into a high-quality compost for the cultivation of mushroom substrate. CNC Grondstoffen is one of the five companies owned by CNC Holding. The group has eight locations in the Netherlands and Poland and sells substrates for the cultivation of mushrooms in more than thirty countries.

Circular economy
The production process from manure to substrate takes place in an environmentally responsible manner. Through the complete reuse of manure - typically a waste product - CNC Grondstoffen contributes to a circular economy.

During the production process, ammonia gases are removed with air scrubbers, and the recovered ammonia is then reused in the production processes. To neutralise the manure smell, CNC Grondstoffen uses bio beds, filled with tree bark. These contain microorganisms that absorb odours. The final product is a durable and high-quality substrate for the cultivation of mushrooms. The strategic location of the factory also reduces transportation distances, effectively removing 2,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year.

Tour
King Willem-Alexander will be shown around the new factory before the official opening ceremony. The opening of the new facility is not open to the public.
