Sri Lanka: Increased awareness about pest management and food safety

Integrated Pest Management and Good Agricultural Practices have become essential components of sustainable agriculture in Sri Lanka. During the period of December 2017 till February 2018, Lentiz Course and Consult conducted 3 workshops for 75 experts in total of the Department of Agriculture and private sector companies in Sri Lanka. In these workshops they focused on vegetable production and addressed many issues of integrated pest management. Presentations and discussions were designed to create awareness about prevention of diseases and pest, monitoring of the problems that were commonly affecting the crops in the area and several methods were highlighted on how to manage the diseased conditions and pests by using effective pest management strategies.

Experts of Control Union, the organization that monitors residue levels and certificates farmers, gave Guest lectures. The agricultural sector of Sri Lanka plays a key role in the country's economic development. Sri Lanka can cultivate vegetables, flowers, and fruit all year round. Using techniques and practices for an efficient and sustainable production are becoming increasingly important more than anything else.

Market window for Dutch companies
Because of the improved business climate and the promising perspectives of the agricultural sector in Sri Lanka, the Netherlands Embassy supports the horticultural development with involvement of Dutch expertise and technology.

On Wednesday afternoon 28 March, in the World Horti Center, a special meeting for interested Dutch suppliers or horticultural organizations will be organized by Lentiz Course and Consult in order to provide further insight in their findings during the 3 workshops and their view on opportunities in the horticultural sector in Sri Lanka.
